Publication of Stories From the Homefront:
Oshawa During the Second World War
The Oshawa Historical Society, Oshawa Public Library and
Laura Suchan are pleased to announce the publication of
Stories From the Homefront: Oshawa During the Second World War. Organized as a series of personal reminiscences and stories,
Stories From the Homefront reflects life in Oshawa during the years 1939-1950 in the words of the many men and women who contributed their vital skills and expertise to the war effort. Topics covered include women in the workplace, war brides, rationing and the Victory Shift.
"We launched this project to preserve these stories and the history of the War years in Oshawa before it is too late," says Laura Suchan, Project Co-ordinator. The Historical Society and Library jointly developed a workbook with memory triggering questions and images to encourage participants to recall these pivotal years in Oshawa's history. "The response was incredible and we were very pleased with how our project was received by the community," says Suchan, "This project belongs to the many people who shared their life experiences and personal anecdotes so today we can better understand what life was like during the War years." Over 70 people participated in the project including an entire history class from the Oshawa Senior Citizen Centre and several groups in retirement homes.
Copies of the 60 page book can be purchased from the Oshawa Historical Society by calling 905 436 7624 or visiting the Oshawa Community Museum and Archives website at www.oshawamuseum.org The cost of the book is $ 20.
